6 or so colleagues and I had a lunch here and in terms of pub grub it was ok.
I had a mango chicken salad and others on the table had lamb burgers, lamb loin, fish and chips(!!) and nachos.
The salad was nice and the lamb burgers looked hearty.
I have a real issue with places that offer the fish BASA in their fish and chips. BASA is a Vietnamese catfish and to me this stinks.
When we initially enquired with the owner what the fish of the day was he said it is likely either cod or snapper. When asked to check, he came back with BASA. BIG difference. When asked why he used a frozen Vietnamese catfish from the Mekong delta, he simply shrugged his shoulders.
I love NZ fresh fish and it is big let down to me that an establishment would use this fish when the fish supply in this country is fine. To me it is a blatant cost saving and if this is the case then fair enough...but why not use Hoki?
When ever anyone mentions the quarry I always mention ....don’t order the fish that is from a fish farm in polluted waters on the other side of the world.
A lot people who may see this think who cares its deep fried fish......but I love fish especially fresh fish.
