This restaurant with such a quaint sounding name is actually part of a long established local pub of 'yesteryear' vintage bearing the same name, being centrally located just off the main road in Karori adjacent to its main shopping centre. The dining area is separated from the bar by being on a slightly lower floor level, connected by a ramp at one end and a few steps up at the other. Tucked away in one corner of the bar is its TAB operations, and beyond that a fortunately out-of-sight gaming area with its ubiquitous and noisy 'pokies'. Currently offering lunch and dinner 'mains' on a '2 for 1' basis through local newspaper advertisements, its dining facilities were well supported when we were there for a mid-week lunch a week ago.
Its limited lunch menu offers eight items ranging from light to full meals, almost all with green salad and/or chips. Amongst these, more substantial dishes included steak on ciabatta bread and beer-battered fish, but we settled for the roast pork with all the usual trimmings and were not in any way disappointed. Our meals were surprisingly very attractively presented, more in the manner of a 'fine dining' establishment, with the meat being fillets than the more usual thinner slices of roast. They were accompanied by a good serve of crackling, although not very crisp, but were rather light on the traditional apple sauce. The coffees we had following our meals were not particularly memorable, but then a pub is not really the place at which to experience fine coffee-making. The bar manager on duty and sole 'front of house' person provided efficient, cordial and reasonably prompt service, despite being busier than usual, this no doubt because of the attractiveness to would-be diners through its current advertising campaign.
The pub walls are adorned with black & white or sepia photos of the area in the 'olden days', these being particularly appreciated by us with a general interest in local history, wherever we are. All in all, we found the pub provided good lunch meals, even if not a wide choice, with these at a modest cost, more especially with the savings offered, and in a pleasant environment. We intend returning for dinner in a month or two to try it out once again.
